Have you ever Skimmed the Departures Board and wondered, What if?

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of hurtling close to the speed of sound toward a destination you know little about.

Told from the perspective of a life spent between places, Essays on Arrival is a collection of stories born out of the small, impractical decisions to pick a flight and go—the kind that begin with glances across flight boards and end in coffee-stained notes, wrong turns, and the people and places you wouldn’t have known otherwise.

It’s surprising how quickly you can go from driving down the freeway to gazing at the northern lights over thunderstorms in the night—each flash of lightning trying to steal the show. The air around the window was cold against my face as I lifted the shade to sneak a glimpse of the Arctic sky. As my eyes slowly adjusted, I could make out the shadows of the cloud tops against a faint green glow. The navigation lights at the wingtips bobbed like buoys as the airframe churned its way through the jet stream—the plane settling into a soothing rhythmic motion. It’s not lost on me that I can drive to the airport and board a flight to most anywhere in the world whenever the chance arises. But, the reality is it doesn’t happen that often. When it does, I’m always pleased to find that the sense of adventure—the rest of the world—was never really that far away, after all.
